What does it mean to lead with compassion, intention, and courage? In this episode of the Life Unscripted Podcast, I sat down with Dan Shaker—founder of HopeLives LLC—to explore what effective leadership looks like during life’s most difficult seasons. Dan is a certified behavioral analyst, a member of the John Maxwell Team, and a speaker committed to helping others grow through adversity.

Leading Through Adversity

Dan didn’t create his business out of convenience—it came from a deep need to serve others navigating challenges. Through years of working alongside business owners and organizational leaders, he witnessed how overwhelming and isolating leadership can be. That’s when he realized the need for a space where leaders could pause, reset, and rebuild with clarity and confidence. That vision became HopeLives.

Life-Altering Experiences that Inspire Service

Back in 2001, Dan had a near-death experience while whitewater rafting. Just weeks later, he was a high school senior in New Jersey watching the 9/11 attacks unfold in real time. Those moments changed everything—his perspective, his priorities, and his path. They ignited a lifelong pursuit of meaningful work centered on service and connection.

Since then, Dan has dedicated his life to helping people move forward with purpose. Whether it’s through coaching, speaking engagements, or team workshops, his mission is rooted in helping individuals live fully and lead authentically.

7 Lessons for Impactful Leadership

In our conversation, Dan broke down seven core values that guide his approach to leadership. These are more than bullet points on a website—they’re daily practices built from experience and reflection:

  • Do Right: Integrity builds long-term trust.
  • Do Your Best: Excellence requires consistency, not perfection.
  • Show You Care: Authenticity opens doors that authority never will.
  • Be Present: Undivided attention is rare—and powerful.
  • Tell the Truth: Transparency fosters safety and real connection.
  • Laugh Often: Humor brings healing and balance to heavy spaces.
  • Never Quit: Resilience is the bridge between failure and success.

My Personal Story: Courage Across Continents

During the interview, I shared how my own leadership journey began. I moved from Colombia to the United States as a teenager after losing my mother. I spoke no English and had no safety net, but I worked for over a decade to become a nurse practitioner. That journey—one marked by loss, persistence, and reinvention—is at the heart of my book The Courage to Succeed: A True American Dream.

If you’ve ever questioned your ability to rise from hardship, know that it’s possible. My life—and Dan’s—are proof.

Presence Over Perfection

One of the most resonant moments from our talk was Dan’s reminder that presence is a leadership superpower. In a world of constant distraction, offering someone your full attention is a radical act. It signals respect, trust, and stability—especially to your team, your family, or your audience.

This idea shows up again and again in the work Dan does through HopeLives. Whether facilitating corporate workshops or coaching entrepreneurs, he challenges people to stop performing and start connecting.
